Mackinaw Watercraft LLC is now offering classes in wood strip canoe, kayak and paddle building. These classes are offered at our Grand Ledge, MI boat-works and will offer students an introduction to all phases of design and construction. Whether you are an avid paddler that wants a closer relationship to your craft or an experienced wood worker looking for a challenging project these classes will offer you new knowledge, skills and insights. Classes are limited in size and fill up quickly so pre-registration is required.

Receive 3 hours of instruction from experienced and acclaimed wooden boat builder Allen Deming. This class is designed as an introduction to the construction of cedar strip canoes, kayaks and paddles. Covered topics will include discussions of boat design, materials, tools and construction techniques. You will receive copies of the class notes and an opportunity to purchases reference texts to aid you in your future boat building efforts From kits and materials to fiberglass and finishing this overview should give you a strong start on the road to building your own wooden watercraft.

Receive 15 hours of instruction from experienced and acclaimed wooden boat builder Allen Deming. This class is designed as an introduction to the construction of cedar strip canoes, kayaks and paddles. Covered topics will include discussions of boat design, materials, tools and construction techniques. The class will rely heavily on live demonstrations and include the opportunity for some hands-on participation in every major phase of strip-built construction. From forms to fiberglass and finishing this overview should give you a strong start on the road to building your own wooden watercraft. Strip-built Boatbuilding 101 is taught in three five hour sessions generally consisting of one Saturday and then a Saturday and Sunday with in two to three weeks of the first session.
